A massive clean-up of pollution took place in our area on 14 October 2023 when members of the ZC Buhlebendalo Enviro Club (BEC), 10 teachers, parents, Zwartkops Conservancy (ZC), staff and their organisation’s members, collected a whopping 294 bags of rubbish from the side of the Motherwell Stormwater Canal.
Jenny Rump, Conservation Officer of ZC, explained that the Motherwell Stormwater Canal is the main source of litter pollution in the Swartkops River Estuary and thus aimed their efforts at the closest point to the canal.
This was their contribution to the International Coastal Clean-up-day, which was meant to take place on 16 September, but which had to be postponed due to the inclement weather conditions.
Jenny said much of the credit should go to BEC’s leader, Pat Ntabeni, who started the club in 2011.
She thanked all that took part and expressed special appreciation to Louis and Cathy Bayers and the Spar trailer for fetching all of the bags and stacking them in an accessible place for collection and BWB SuperSpar for “their fantastic support in providing everyone with hot dogs, chips, bananas and Aquella flavoured water.
