The St Croix Sea Scouts have installed a litter bin on the open property on which the outdoor gym in Claude Crescent is located.
Troop Scouter, Norman (Skip) Visser, says the Scouts identified the need for a bin earlier in the year during their “Litter Less Campaign”, where their aim was to clean up the area around the St. Croix Scout Hall.
“The idea is that many kids use that park after school and no bin was provided or serviced by the municipality,” he says.

The Scouts took up the challenge of setting up a bin to help keep that area of Bluewater Bay tidier and as part of the National Challenge 2023 (Champions For Nature).
Norman says items already at the club hall at the bottom of Tippers Creek, a donation of a pocket of cement and bags of enthusiasm, the Scouts set up and prepared the site, dug a hole for the post to which the bin is fixed and set about installing the bin. They made all the fixings and hinges and planned the entire project. (They are all aged between 11 and 15.)
He said the Scouts plan to set up a small water-wise garden around it with aloes, cacti and other colourful one-drop-plants that need no maintenance.
The “ribbon cutting” was performed by the troop’s ‘Seagulls’ Patrol leader.
The Scouts will service the bin as and when required, and they call upon the community to keep an eye on it and lend a hand with not just this, but any beautification in and around Bluewater Bay.

It should be remembered that litter on the streets land up in our stormwater drains and can not only block them but also travel down with the water when it rains thus polluting our rivers and the ocean and causing harm to sea birds and other aquatic life.
Every resident is urged to join in and assist where they can by keeping litter off the streets and helping each other, which will ultimately result in a cleaner, safer, and more pleasant neighbourhood for all.
