The Nipper section of the Bluewater Bay Surf Lifesaving Club produced the most successful Santa Coming Down the River events in decades despite having limited time to put it all together.
The main organiser Pieter Zeeman, was elected Nipper Chairman in August this year and was only notified on 12th October about his responsibility to have everything ready by 3rd December. The event that has been an annual tradition for 50 years.
Getting the décor sorted out was a family affair with Pieter’s wife, Adele, and his father, Piet, working flat out over weekends to produce Santa’s grotto in the club.
“This event would not have been such a huge success without the support of our locals. SPAR Bluewater Bay was the biggest contributor to this event by donating refreshments, snacks and pallets, with no hesitation. A huge thanks and appreciation go out to Robbie for organizing and assisting. Bluewater Bay DIY for donating the Paint, Bay Car Wash and Klinicare for donating funds towards this event and lastly, Jeanette Homan, for creating a beautiful balloon arch for Santa,” said Pieter.
In the meantime, the Club’s Supporter Chairperson, Delicia Billson and club member, Tanya Liebenberg, organised advertising and the draping of the venue.
A final flurry on Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday morning ensured the club was decorated so that every adult and child could experience the Christmas Spirit.
At 11h30 on Sunday, parents accompanied their children to the banks of the Swartkops River to await Santa’s arrival by a large surfboat powered by the club’s boat crew. It was necessary to have a second boat as well due to the number of gifts to be delivered.
Club member, Craig Hendricks (who is also Chairman of Neighbourhood Watch/iPatrol) welcomed all and, one-by-one, called the kiddies up to receive a present from Santa and enjoy a photo opportunity.
All money raised during the event will be going towards the 2023/2024 Nipper Season which will start on 14 January 2024.
“We invite all children in Bluewater Bay aged between 5 and 13 to join us on the beach that day to learn more about the Nippers. We also call on parents to join us. Their involvement is crucial if we want to rebuild Nippers to where we would like to be. All training and coaching are voluntary.
