Demarcation of Bluewater Bay boosted IEC registration numbers last weekend

Only 185 new voters registered at the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) sites in Bluewater Bay and Swartkops over two days last weekend.

However, the exercise did help 500 registered voters change to the correct ward.  These voters were mainly new arrivals or those that had to change from Ward 60 to Ward 16 following the demarcation of Bluewater Bay into two areas in 2021.

There were also 658 voters who merely checked their voter status and were classified as re-registrations.

On a gender basis, 726 people that visited the two sites were female and 617 were male.

Despite expectations of a huge increase in the number of political parties participating in the National Elections later this year, only three bothered to have a presence at the registration sites.  These were the Democratic Alliance, Freedom Front Plus and the African National Congress.

The IEC says since November, a further 1.2 million people have been added to the voter’s roll.

It is widely anticipated that the Government will announce the date for the elections on 23 February and that the elections will be held on 22 May 2024.
