Bluewater Bay’s Granny Stock Car Racer

Go Granny, Go Grany, Go Granny Go!  No, it is not the Little Old Lady from Pasadena – the speedster is Bluewater Bay Granny, Cathy Whittle who participated in a stock car race at Greenbushes last weekend.

Cathy moved to Bluewater Bay two years ago following the death of hubby, Winston to be closer to her daughter, Chene Tuck, her husband, Tyron, and grandchildren, 10-year-old Seth and 3-year-old Donna.

Cathy started racing stock cars in 2007 in the Std V8 Class.  She then raced a BMW 525i (6 cylinder) before progressing to the American Saloon Class (V8) around 2013. Cathy stopped racing in 2015 due to a neck injury.

But the bug has bitten, and the active Granny is at it again!

“Stock Car Racing is a monthly event, normally the last weekend of a month at Mission Road, Greenbushes,” says Cathy. “I partook in a ladies race this past Saturday (25 November) in a VW Golf 1600.”

The photo on the left is of Cathy and 15-year-old Reghardt Joubert – the driver of the Red Bull Golf that was loaned to Cathy for the race.

Two of Cathy’s friends that were cheering her on, Cleo Barnes (left) and Julie van Jaarsveldt (right), both from Bluewater Bay, were more than impressed with Cathy’s skills as she led from just after the start to the checkered flag in a comfortable victory.

“It was an evening well spent with friends and exciting racing, especially when Cathy raced,” said Cleo.  “She knew how to handle a car on the track,” she added.  “Cathy ran a great race,” said Julie, “she led from the start.”

Another Bluewater Bay Resident, Paul Flower, said a good time was had by all.  Paul took the pics.

Cathy is exceptionally fit and goes ballroom dancing every Thursday night and some nights, if the bar at the Bluewater Bay Surf Lifesaving Club gets busy, she jumps in to assist in serving of the patrons.
