A rowing team consisting of three ladies from Bluewater Bay and one from Redhouse came away with two third places at the World Masters Rowing Championship that took place in Pretoria last month.
Bluewater Bay ladies, Kayla Greyling and Jacky Brunette took third place in the doubles and then teamed up with Jenn Seady (also BWB) and Jeanine McManus (formerly from Redhouse but now living in Hermanus) to take third in the quads event.
“When we raced our quad race, we got out the starting blocks first. At about 650 metres, Kayla’s steering block came loose and we lost our ability to steer the boat in a straight line. We had to hang on for dear life,” said Jenn.
“I love our story, a bunch of girls having fun, determined and tenacious. I will treasure our friendship always,” she added.
About 900 competitors (including some Olympians) from around the world participated in various age group events.
Kayla, Jacky and Jenn are part of the Bluewater Bay Surf Lifesaving Club surfboat crew that won a silver medal at Lifesaving South Africa’s National Champs that took place in March this year. The other two members of that crew are Jessica and Tameez de Vos.
