Artificial sand dune at BWB beach causing more harm than good

Bluewater Bay’s main swimming beach parking area is being covered in sea sand. This is mainly due to a misplaced artificial sand dune. The sand has even spread to the main entrance to the beach.

With the westerly being the prevailing wind, logic dictated that the dune run from west sloping eastwards towards the sea. But local knowledge would have told them that the westerly is our friend. It is the easterly that is “an ill wind that blows nobody any good.”

As it is placed at present, sand stacks up against the eastern side of the artificial dune.  When the wind blows strongly, that sand is channeled through onto the parking area. instead of back towards the sea.

One can clearly see how the sand that previously built up on the easterly side of the dune has been stripped away, leaving only the ugly bare rocks and wire netting. This sand landed up in the parking area and beach entrance. By simply adjusting the dune to run from the east, sloping westwards towards the sea, the sand would be pushed back onto the beach.

That is not the only area that requires proper dune management.  Dunes along Wavecrest, the road that leads down to the Lifesaving Club, were almost washed away by a tide surge a few months ago. This has resulted in the road being covered by sand almost every time the easterly wind blows.

This is costing the municipality both time and money that could be better spent elsewhere.

A very helpful Metro Roads Department has promised to clear the sand on the swimming beach parking area and Wavecrest Road during today and tomorrow.
